Jana Roman and Pamela Chan first met when working
at adjacent benches in the now sadly demolished Jewellery studio at Box Hill
Institute. They attained their
Advanced Diplomas of Engineering Technology (Jewellery and metal) and bonded
over their love of dumplings and a shared aversion to bright and shiny
things. Jana and Pamela continued
their studies at RMIT again moving into adjacent workbenches.
Though always independently pursuing projects, Jana
Roman and Pamela Chan occasionally intersected in their choice of materials and
often engaged in a complementary conversation regarding form, texture and
function. As so many discussions about jewellery and object making took place
over lunch, the development of a series of functional vessels and utensils
related to tea and dumplings was inevitable. Having not previously collaborated
on the production of work, the tenth anniversary of Jana and Pamela's
object-making friendship seemed like a good time to experiment with such a
challenge.
Pamela Chan
completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with First Class Honours, Gold &
Silversmithing at RMIT University (2014).
Working from her Menzies Creek studio in the outer east of Melbourne,
Pamela explores different materials and mediums to create contemporary
jewellery and objects. Her work is
an exploration of repetition and the connection between past and present. Pamela's current practice focuses on
developing jewellery and ceramic objects as canvases for her Chinese brush
painting. Taking inspiration from
the natural environment and family heirlooms, she explores the tonal and
textural qualities found in the essence and fluidity of the brush stroke as a
connection to her Chinese background.
With an enduring interest in human
inhabitation of the natural and built environment, Jana Roman’s current
practice uses salvaged materials and modified post consumer waste. Jana has
shown in many group exhibitions of furniture, jewellery and silversmithing. Completing a Bachelor of Fine Art (First Class
Honours – Gold & Silversmithing) at RMIT in 2014 Jana received the Wolf
Wennrich Award for Craftsmanship (RMIT), and was 2015 co-resident of the RMIT
Maggie Fairweather Studio. Jana exhibited in the 2015 Galerie Marzee Graduate
Exhibition, the Griffith Regional Art Gallery National Contemporary Jewellery
Award 2014 and was selected for three consecutive Contemporary
Australian Silver & Metalwork Award exhibitions.
